This course will meet virtually Apr 4-5, 2024 from 1:00-4:30 pm EST. This class is eligible HRM/HRCI re-certification credits. Please be sure you can attend all classes before registering.

This is the first of three courses that constitute the Managing People sequence. You can also consider signing up for Managing People: Helping People Work Better or Managing People: Counseling and Discipline, the other two courses in the sequence (none are pre-requisites for the other, but the course material does build).

Leadership represents the degree to which we are able to influence other people’s behavior. For those who serve as managers and supervisors, leadership qualities are critical to their success. This course will stress the interpersonal component of leadership, particularly connecting the manner in which we communicate to our ability to influence others. In that context we will study a concept – critical moments – that will provide a tool any person can use to improve his or her leadership skills.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the interpersonal components of leadership;
  • Describe the connection between interpersonal communication and influence;
  • Explain the barriers that exist when two or more individuals send and receive messages;
  • Identify “critical moments;” and,
  • Demonstrate how to manage a critical moment.

Registration fee is $295. Complete registration below. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Kimberly Avale (kss5011@psu.edu). Transactions are eligible for a full refund until the first day of classes, afterwards no refunds will be accepted.
