Assistant Professor Elaine Hui Publishes First Book

January 30, 2018

Earlier this month, assistant professor Elaine Hui published her first book, “Hegemonic Transformation: The State, Laws, and Labour Relations in Post-Socialist China.”

Based on interviews with Chinese workers and more than 10 months of research, Hui’s book reveals that after the 1978 economic reform of the country, the decades that followed ushered in a new wave of labor systems in China. Hui takes a look at how the environment of China’s labor systems has affected workers from all backgrounds, and how the system will continue to evolve going forward.

Hui holds a PhD in Economics and Social Sciences from the University of Kassel, Germany. Her research focuses on the state, industrial relations, laws, worker collective actions, civil society and social welfare system in China. She has also researched on labor relations in Vietnam and Hong Kong, among others. She has published in peer-reviewed journals such as the British Journal of Industrial Relations, China Quarterly, Journal of Industrial Relations, and Journal of Contemporary Asia.
