CWP Webinar: Effective Mentoring

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Center for Workplace Performance will continue their webinar series on Wednesday, April 1 at 8:00 p.m. with "Effective Mentoring." Steven J. Greenblatt, Esq. and the CWP's own Michael Edenhart-Pepe, Ph.D., will discuss effective mentoring and ways to implement mentoring programs in organizations. The webinar counts towards 1.5 SHRM/HRCI Recertification Credits.

Program: 

The first part of the webinar explores the conditions that must be established and the skills necessary to engage in the act of mentoring. Many HR professionals must address the need to informally mentor early career HR team members as well as line managers in need of development support. The second part of the webinar addresses some of the most critical considerations for launching and sustaining a formal mentoring program. Brief case studies are also reviewed.

Presenter Biographies:

Steven J. Greenblatt, Esq.

Steve Greenblatt has over 30 years of human resource practice in employee relations, employee discipline, training and organizational development, Affirmative Action, conflict resolution, and contract and benefits administration. Prior to that, Greenblatt served as Assistant District Attorney in Bronx County, Appellate Counsel to District Attorneys in over 20 counties in New York State and Deputy Inspector General for the NYC Department of Sanitation in charge of its disciplinary system. As a trial and appellate attorney in criminal and civil disciplinary arenas, Steve has trained attorneys, investigators and human resource professionals in investigative, arbitration and trial techniques.

In human resource roles, while Director of Labor Relations, and Director of Workforce Training and Development at the State University of New York (S.U.N.Y.) Downstate Medical Center, he also served as Ethics Officer, Acting Affirmative Action Officer and Temporary Employment Counsel. As Training Director, Greenblatt focused on enhancing leaders’ self-awareness, restoring organizational trust and vitality, and reducing implicit bias. Greenblatt has litigated grievance and disciplinary arbitrations, mediated and resolved disputes, crafted policies and procedures and managed employee satisfaction, engagement and outplacement initiatives. He currently teaches online graduate courses for Pennsylvania State University in diversity and ethics for human resource practitioners.

Greenblatt’s most recent article, “Why I Feel Like a Fish Out of Water, or, Monachopsis”, appears in four consecutive issues of the Employee Relations Law Journal, volumes 43-44 (2017-18).  He also authored a chapter on employment law in Risk Management in Healthcare Institutions and an article, “Teaching Business Ethics as a Sequitur”, in Ethics in Biology, Engineering and Medicine. He conducted two solo CLE presentations, “21st Century Discrimination”, and, “How Leadership Can Create Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession”.

Greenblatt received his B.A. in Political Science at Brooklyn College, his J.D. from New York Law School, and a Masters in Labor Law from the New York University School of Law. He currently conducts training and does management consulting.  His research interests focus on the impact of discrimination in the workplace, leadership, workplace civility, retaliation, bystanders, bullying, sexual harassment, employee engagement, risk management in employment, and ethics pedagogy.

As a Professor of Practice in the School of Labor and Employment Relations, Dr. Edenhart-Pepe draws on more than 25 years of diverse, human resource practitioner experience to engage, inspire and mentor his graduate students.

Edenhart-Pepe has extensive experience in organizational design, large scale change, talent management, and executive coaching.  He has successfully coached C-level executives through significant organizational transformation and personal transitions.

As a founding partner of Meaningful Growth Associates of Bucks County, PA, he provided a host of consulting services including; Executive and Team Coaching, Assessment-Driven Development Programs, Group Facilitation, Talent Management Infrastructure, Succession Planning and Organizational Change Support.

Edenhart-Pepe has held senior leadership roles with “best in class” organizations including GE, the Yale Health System and Virtua. At the Yale Health System, he launched the Institute for Excellence to develop talent and ensure the continuity of leadership across the system with 13,000 employees.  While at GE Healthcare, Michael introduced an innovative program of self-discovery and brought it to GE leaders across the globe.  Edenhart-Pepe's efforts at transforming HR led to his team at Virtua being awarded “ 2012 HR Department of the Year” in the Delaware Valley.

Dr. Edenhart-Pepe received his doctorate in instructional process and his Masters in educational psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and his bachelor's degree in business from Farleigh Dickinson University. He also studied British literature and culture in Oxfordshire, England.

He has published articles for the International Organization Development Journal, American Society of Training & Development, HRO Today and The Society of Human Resources Management on succession planning, sustaining leadership development, generations at work and the illusiveness of trust.  He has presented at professional associations including the Philadelphia Chamber of Business and Industry, SHRM and the Human Resources Executive Alliance.
