Labor and Human Resources

In order to succeed in today’s work environment, it is important that you understand the most current issues related to human resources and employment relations. To help you gain knowledge in this field, the School of Labor and Employment Relations has partnered with the College of the Liberal Arts to offer an interdisciplinary minor in Labor and Human Resources (LHR).

The LHR minor is beneficial to students from a wide range of study areas and provides a broad background in the issues of work, employment, the employment relationship, and human resource management. By obtaining your LHR minor, you can have a better understanding of your role in the workplace while you gain a more flexible career path.

This in an 18 credit minor is open to all interested undergraduate students who meet the prerequisites; it can be most useful if you are majoring in any liberal arts or business major.

In this program, you will have the opportunity to study with highly regarded faculty from Penn State’s College of the Liberal Arts, one of the premier institutions in the world to study and work in the liberal arts disciplines.

For more information about the minor, please email Sheila Lieb.

Dispute Management and Resolution

This interdisciplinary minor administered by the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences and the School of Labor and Employment Relations provides students with the opportunity to learn about, and develop skills appropriate to, the management and resolution of problems created by differences in attitudes, beliefs, values, and behavioral preferences of individuals primarily in interpersonal, group, and organizational contexts, and, to a lesser extent, international contexts. The minor is supportive of, and complementary to, work emphasizing conflict and means for dealing with it in such majors as Administration of Justice, Communication Arts and Sciences, Human Development and Family Studies, Labor and Industrial Relations, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Students pursuing the minor must complete nine credits of prescribed course work and nine credits of additional course work distributed across at least two of the eight areas identified below. Of the 18 credits selected, at least nine must be at the 400 level, six must be from Communication Arts and Sciences, and six must be from Labor and Human Resources. A maximum of six credits earned in the minor, if appropriate, can be used to satisfy requirements in the communication arts and sciences or labor and human resources majors. Only courses in which the student earns a grade of C or better may be counted toward fulfillment of requirements for the minor.

Students can declare a minor in Dispute Management Resolution in LionPath as long as they have declared a major.

Organizational Leadership

Organizational Leadership (OLEAD) is a general leadership degree. It focuses on teaching you broad-based leadership skills that are portable to any situation such as communication, motivation, decision-making, working with a diverse and global workforce, and leadership development. While a management degree typically prepares you for leading in the corporate world, an OLEAD degree can prepare you to lead in the corporate world, the public sector, non-profits, NGOs, government, small business, and other fields. A minor in OLEAD will give you not only the knowledge of leadership, but the skills to use that knowledge to lead in any type of organization that you join.

  • OLEAD 100 Introduction to Organizational Leadership
  • OLEAD 201 Organizational Theory and Functions
