Courses and workshops are held in the evening or on weekends in locations throughout Pennsylvania, where our faculty travel to deliver programs in partnership with labor organizations. Programs are hosted online and at the University Park campus.
Healthcare Partnership Initiative
The Healthcare Labor-Management Partnership Initiative (HPI) at Penn State is committed to encouraging the implementation of new labor-management partnerships in healthcare organizations and to working with existing partnerships to help them reach their full potential.
Labor Activist Academy
This series of non-credit courses is designed to equip labor activists, stewards, and leaders to meet the challenges facing today’s labor movement. Classes are offered through partnerships with local labor councils around the commonwealth.
Leadership for a Renewed Labor Movement
Our executive leadership program focuses on movement building and increasing capacity for leading change. Through three intensive retreats, leaders envision the movement they want to build, the role of leadership in doing so, and organizational strategies to achieve a renewed movement.
The program is designed for principal officers and other labor leaders with a significant sphere of influence. The next cohort of this program will begin in July 2027. See the flyer for more detailed information!
AI Learning Collaborative
Penn State’s Labor School has organized an AI Learning Collaborative for Healthcare Unions and Union Leaders. The Learning Collaborative is a network of healthcare union leaders and union activists who wish to learn more about artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and experts and facilitators who wish to share their knowledge and expertise on this critical issue.
The Collaborative provides several ways for healthcare union leaders and activists to learn more about AI through webinars, resources, a collection of contract language from healthcare contracts, and a conference planned for Spring 2026.
The program is designed for principal officers and other labor leaders with a significant sphere of influence. The next cohort of this program will begin in July 2027. See the flyer for more detailed information!
Roundtable
The Pennsylvania Labor Educators’ Roundtable is a space for labor educators and those interested in labor education to share curriculum and discuss best practices, challenges, and ideas for engaging activities. The Roundtable meets virtually via Zoom once per quarter. If you would like to participate in the Roundtable, please email laborschool@psu.edu indicating your interest.
Staff Training for Strong Unions
When you are most effective in your role, you help members exercise their power and drive our movement forward. Participants in this program will gain a foundational understanding of our labor history and uncover the structure and relationships that shape today’s labor movement.
UALE Northeast Women’s Summer School
Our faculty regularly teach in the UALE Northeast Summer School for Women in Unions and Worker Organizations, offered every summer at a different regional location. One of four residential programs sponsored by the United Association for Labor Education, the school brings together labor women to gain knowledge, skills, and support to become more active leaders.
Save the Date! The 49th UALE Northeast Summer School for Women in Unions and Worker Organizations will take place on July 20-24, 2026 at the City University of New York in New York City.
