Biography:

Mr. Jafar Iqbal is a young professional and union educator who has been working in Bangladesh to promote  rights and interest of workers.  Since 2014, he has been working in ILO Dhaka Office as a program officer to promote fundamental principles and rights at work and provide expert support to strengthening the capacity of the trade union movement in the Bangldesh's Ready-Made Garments Industry (RMG). One of his greatest achievements is to facilitate the process in establishing the Workers Resource Centre (WRC), an education arm of the largest union network in Bangladesh including IndustriAll Bangladesh Council (IBC).  He has led the ILO Staff Union as Chairperson from 2016 to 2019 to defends the rights and interest of its members.

Prior to this, he worked with State University of New York's Center for International Development (SUNY/CID) to reform labor legislation in Bangladesh with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labor and Employment Relations. He has demonstrated hands-on research and advocacy skills working on empowerment of female workers in the RMG sector with BRAC University and Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). He has wide range of publications on labor rights, labor legislation, workplace safety for union education and received a number of international trainings on union organizing, freedom of associations, collective bargaining, negotiation skills, social dialogue and advance industrial relations.

A dynamic labor rights expert, Mr. Iqbal, with his substantive work experience and labor rights expertise, including a six week capstone research at Penn State, desires to  work with a U.S. based union, a labor rights NGO, or with a university or other progressive organization to promote the workers’ struggle for social justice and decent work.
