Course Outline

Course Description

A counseling session is a discussion about an apparent performance problem. Every supervisor will eventually conduct such a meeting. It is imperative that individuals understand the relationship between that important activity and the disciplinary process. Many supervisors confuse this discussion with a disciplinary penalty. This course will treat a counseling session as a method to avoid discipline. By placing these two topics together, we can help those who must use these tools to better understand how they relate.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • The definition of a counseling session;
  • How to conduct a counseling session;
  • How to document counseling sessions, including how to write an effective counseling memo;
  • The relationship among counseling, performance appraisal and discipline;
  • Ethical standards associated with the application of the disciplinary process; and,
  • Practice applying those standards to disciplinary cases.
