Professor Jelena Zikic School of Human Resource Management York University, Toronto In this conversation Professor Jelena Zikic will explore how contemporary careers promise freedom and growth yet often generate instability and identity strain. Specifically, from her research she will provide examples of how careers are shaped by tensions between mobility and meaning, and how career actors of diverse types (from skilled migrants to digital nomads) may not be resolving but rather rebalancing these tensions through identity work, relational connection, and contextual understanding.

Jelena Zikic, PhD (University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management) is a Professor at York University, School of Human Resource Management. Her research focuses on career transitions and associated challenges of diverse populations (migrants, baby boomers, remote workers, unemployed, expats and others). In her work, she seeks to bridge micro type phenomena, such as professional identity with more macro-organizational processes (i.e., remote work, integration of diverse workforce). Zikic has significant international background, cross-cultural research collaborations and varied teaching experience. Her work has been recognized by several Research Awards and has appeared in top ranked journals in her field such as Academy of Management Discoveries, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Relations among others. Global Talent Management: A Critical Review and Research Agenda for the New Organizational Reality

Paula M. Caligiuri, David G. Collings, Helen De Cieri, and Mila B. Lazarova
Global talent management (GTM) refers to management activities in a multinational enterprise (MNE) that focus on attracting, motivating, deploying, and retaining high performing and/or high potential employees in strategic roles across a firm’s global operations. Despite the critical importance for individual and firm outcomes, scholarly analysis and understanding lack synthesis, and there is limited evidence that MNEs are managing their talent effectively on a global scale. In this article, we review the GTM literature and identify the challenges of implementing GTM in practice. We explore how GTM is aligned with MNE strategy, examine how talent pools are identified, and highlight the role of global mobility. We discuss GTM at the macro level, including the exogenous factors that impact talent management and the outcomes of GTM at various levels. Finally, we identify some emerging challenges and opportunities for the future of GTM.
