UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – On June 25, the Center for International Human Resource Studies (CIHRS) participated in the first in a series of webinars focusing specifically on international HRM topics. The series was organized by the Centre for Global Workforce Strategy at Simon Fraser University (Canada), CIHRS, and ESCP Business School in Europe.
“With all major conferences moving to virtual settings as well as the cancellation of the IHRM 2020 Conference, most of us will be unable to meet in person this summer,” explained organizers. “Still, our work as researchers, educators, and community members must continue. This webinar series was designed as an effort to find inspiration, hear about the latest research, and inform our own work.”
The first webinar, "Looking Beyond the Pandemic: What's Next for International HRM?” was led by Dana Minbaeva (Copenhagen Business School, Denmark), Helen De Cieri (Monash University, Australia), and Angelika Zimmermann (Loughborough University, UK). CIHRS Director and Professor of Human Resource Management Elaine Farndale moderated the session.
Minbaeva, De Cieri, and Zimmermann discussed their ideas on the relevance of IHRM to challenges arising from the current COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past months, they conducted a detailed analysis of key issues in IHRM that were amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their research found that the HRM issues emerging during the pandemic also highlighted critical future changes for employees across many types of organizations. The results of the assessment were recently published in the Journal of International Business Studies and can be read here.
As the world is reopening after the pandemic, the key issue on the agenda of firms and public organizations–regardless of size and industry–is how to facilitate reopening, noted Minbaeva, DeCieri, and Zimmermann. Reflecting on their recent experiences will help webinar participants not only to “move on,” but also to use the experiences from the crisis as an opportunity to nurture new competences and effective pathways towards impactful research in the post-pandemic “new normal.”
According to organizers, more than 200 people from 48 countries were in attendance at this webinar. Despite the less personal Zoom format, organizers called the event “insightful and dynamic. It sparked conversation and questions.”

Three more webinars are currently planned for the fall. These virtual presentations will reflect the keynotes that would have taken place at the IHRM 2020 Conference that was to be held in Paris.

About the Presenters:
Dana Minbaeva (Ph.D.) is a Professor at the Department of Strategy and Innovation, and the Vice-President for International Affairs at Copenhagen Business School. Her research on strategic international HRM has appeared in top international journals, numerous book chapters and reports. She received several national and international awards to research achievements, including the prestigious Journal of International Business (JIBS) Decade Award 2013.
Helen De Cieri (Ph.D.) is a Professor at Monash Business School, Monash University, Australia. Her current research activities combine her interests in international HRM and employee health and wellbeing. Her publications include articles in journals such as Human Resource Management, Journal of World Business, and Accident Analysis and Prevention.
Angelika Zimmermann (Ph.D.) is a Senior Lecturer in International Business and Strategy at Loughborough University, School of Business and Economics, United Kingdom. Her current research centres on cross-boundary collaborations in global teams and multi-stakeholder initiatives. Her work has been published in journals such as Journal of World Business, International Journal of Management Reviews, and Information Systems Journal.

Elaine Farndale (Ph.D.) is a Professor in HRM and Associate Director of the School of Labor and Employment Relations, Pennsylvania State University (USA), where she is also founder and director of the Center for International Human Resource Studies. Elaine has published widely on international HRM topics and currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief for Human Resource Management Journal and Co-Editor for Routledge’s Global HRM book series.
